Barnett Shale Information |
Oil and natural gas exploration and production in the Barnett Shale has increased significantly in recent years. Portions of several counties in the North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG) service area underly the Barnett Shale and there is increasing interest in and concern about these activities. NCTCOG staff has developed this website as a resource for citizens and entities who wish to learn more about Barnett Shale activities.

The North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG) completed a study to improve the accuracy of activity and emissions estimates for on-road mobile sources serving the Barnett Shale natural gas exploration and production industry.

The information provided from this project will significantly advance the current knowledge of the activities and emissions for heavy-duty trucks hauling equipment, water, and other material to and from well sites. This improved understanding will provide insight into possible emission control measures. |
Barnett Shale Truck Traffic Survey UPDATED
As one aspect of the Oil and Gas Mobile Source Inventory Study, NCTCOG
conducted an evaluation to assess truck traffic in the Barnett Shale. The goal of this effort was to gather information regarding potential air quality and roadway impacts from on-road sources associated with natural gas driling and extraction. As part of this project, NCTCOG requested feedback from industry participants, including natural gas operators and truck contractors. Examples of the surveys and a link to the final study report is provided above.
Utilization of this data will improve the accuracy of transportation and air quality modeling. It will also help determine whether there is a need for future funding to help reduce ozone-forming pollution, which would assist efforts to comply with federal air quality standards or address road maintenance needs. For more information, please contact Roxann Nayar at 817-608-2378 or email at barnettshale@nctcog.org. Links to the survey results and other supporting information is available in the Appendices (linked above).
NCTCASC Oil and Gas Task Force
The role of the NCTCASC Oil and Gas Task Force is to consider the effects of oil and gas production on regional air quality in North Texas and to identify opportunities to mitigate associated impacts.
